Pest Control in Valinda, CA

Valinda is a pocket of unincorporated Los Angeles County between La Puente, the City of Industry and West Covina, and most of it was built in one wave of 1950s subdivisions. Nine in ten homes are detached houses and about four in five are lived in by their owners. Houses that age tend to share the same weak spots — original vents and eaves, drain lines that may be 60 or 70 years old — and with few parks within walking distance, the backyard is where much of the outdoor life happens. PesPro works out of El Monte, 5.9 miles away in a straight line, and we plan Valinda treatments around those houses and yards.

Built in the 1950s, owned by the people who live here

Census estimates count about 20,962 residents and 4,954 homes in Valinda. Of those homes, 4,446 are detached single-family houses — roughly nine in ten — and the median one was built in 1957. More than half went up during the 1950s alone, and about two in three predate 1960. The county's East San Gabriel Valley Area Plan describes the place the same way: about two square miles of single-family subdivisions with very little multifamily housing.

Two things follow for pest control. A house that has stood for close to 70 years is likely to have worn foundation and attic vents, gaps where the eaves meet the walls, and drain lines from the original build or an early repair — the routes roof rats, mice and cockroaches use. And with about 79% of homes owner-occupied, most Valinda households can approve sealing work, cut a branch back from the roof or replace a vent screen without waiting on a landlord, which makes it practical to treat the pest and close its way in as part of one plan.

Only 17% of residents live near a park

The county's 2016 Parks and Recreation Needs Assessment found that just 17% of people in unincorporated Valinda live within half a mile of a park, compared with a county average of 49%. The study counted about 100 acres of parkland in its Valinda study area, but 92 of those acres are in a single place, the Industry Hills Recreation Center; Rimgrove Park adds most of the rest at 8.2 acres.

Where public green space is this thin, private yards tend to fill the gap with fruit trees, vegetable beds, sheds, play sets and dog runs. No data shows that Valinda has more pests than its neighbors. It does suggest that the backyard is where outdoor pest activity here is most likely to build up, so our inspections spend real time outside: fallen fruit, stored items rodents can nest behind, ivy and stacked wood against walls, and anything that still holds water after the sprinklers shut off.

The Puente Creek Channel on the south side

According to the county area plan, the Puente Creek Channel runs through the southern part of Valinda, and planners identify it as a possible future trail link toward San Jose Creek and the San Gabriel River.

Drainage corridors like this are a likely travel route for rats, and the storm drains and sewer lines around them are where American cockroaches typically live before they turn up indoors. We have no report of a specific problem along the channel; the point is practical. On streets near it, we check garage and floor drains, the base of block walls and the gaps under side gates, and we flag any standing water in the yard.

West Nile virus reached Valinda's own row in 2026

The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District, whose service area includes Valinda, publishes a table of West Nile virus activity by community each season. In 2026 Valinda appears in it by name for the first time: three positive mosquito samples, the first detected on August 13, the same day the virus was found in West Puente Valley and East San Gabriel. Valinda is not listed by name in any of the district's tables from 2020 through 2025. As of the district's October 19 update, no dead birds from Valinda had tested positive, and 219 positive mosquito samples had been logged district-wide.

The state health department lists the invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti as present in Valinda and records Aedes albopictus as last detected here in 2023. Both are day-biting species that can spread dengue. The district counted 11 locally acquired dengue cases in the San Gabriel Valley in 2024, eight of them in Baldwin Park, and five in 2025; none were attributed to Valinda.

PesPro does not provide mosquito control. That work belongs to the district, at 1145 N. Azusa Canyon Rd. in West Covina, (626) 814-9466. What each household can do is tip out plant saucers, pet water bowls, buckets and birdbaths every week and keep pools and spas circulating. If we spot standing water during a rodent or cockroach visit, we'll show you where it is.

Fleas and the county's typhus numbers

Los Angeles County Public Health recorded 220 cases of flea-borne typhus in 2025, up from 187 the year before and the most on record; nearly nine in ten patients were hospitalized. The fleas involved travel on rats, stray cats and opossums. The county's 2025 clusters were outside the San Gabriel Valley, and none of these figures are specific to Valinda.

The local relevance is in the yard. In a community where backyards stand in for parks, a rat nest behind a woodpile or under a shed can bring fleas within reach of the family dog. The county advises keeping pets on flea control all year. On our side, when an inspection turns up both rodents and fleas, we plan the rodent exclusion and the flea treatment together rather than one after the other.

Spanish, English and a Chinese-language website

About 55% of Valinda residents age five and older speak Spanish at home, according to the Census, and the community also has sizable groups of Chinese speakers (about 1,910 people) and Tagalog speakers (about 862). Our technicians explain findings and preparation steps in English or Spanish. For Chinese-speaking families, the PesPro website is also available in Chinese at pespro.com/zh, so service details can be read in Chinese before a visit.
