Rat Removal and Rodent Control in Azusa

Rats and mice in Azusa follow food — fallen fruit, birdseed, pet bowls — and then shelter in garages, wall voids and attics. We remove the rodents already inside, close the openings they used and help you take away what attracted them.

The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District does not handle rats or mice, so rodent problems on private property fall to the owner or a pest control company.

What the city's coyote program says about rodents

Azusa sits at the mouth of the San Gabriel Canyon, and the city runs a coyote management program with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments. Its advice to residents is really a food-chain lesson: keep trash in bins with tight lids, pick up fallen fruit, and bring bird feeders in at night, because spilled seed attracts rodents and rodents attract coyotes.

We follow the same logic. Before setting a single trap, we walk the yard for the things that feed rodents — seed under feeders, fruit on the ground, pet food left out, open compost — because removing food is what keeps a trapped-out property from refilling.

Garages, vents and 1970s construction

Azusa's median home dates to 1970. In houses that age, the openings we find most often are warped bottom seals and side gaps on garage doors, foundation and crawl-space vents with rusted or missing screens, and holes where air-conditioning lines, dryer vents or cables pass through stucco. Garages are a favorite target because they hold stored pet food, birdseed and clutter to nest in.

Newer homes are not immune. Rosedale, the planned community at the north end of the city, is nearly built out with 1,227 of 1,250 approved homes, and even recent construction can let mice in through a garage door left open or gaps around later add-ons. We seal with chew-resistant materials — hardware cloth, sheet metal, rodent-rated door sweeps and garage seals — instead of foam or steel wool on their own.

Fleas, typhus and the case for not waiting

Los Angeles County reported 220 flea-borne typhus cases in 2025, up from 187 the year before and the most it has ever recorded; nearly nine in ten patients were hospitalized. The fleas that spread it live on rats, stray cats and opossums. That is a county-wide figure, not an Azusa count, but it is a good reason to deal with rodents under the house or in the garage early.

Because the local vector district does not respond to rodents, it is up to homeowners and property managers to act. PesPro handles rodent exclusion and trapping and also offers flea and tick control, so both problems can be treated in the same plan.

How we handle rodent control in Azusa

1. Trace the trail

We follow droppings, rub marks and chew damage back to the places rodents are getting in.

  • Garage door and weatherstrip check
  • Foundation and crawl-space vents
  • Roofline, eaves and utility penetrations
  • Yard food sources noted

2. Trap and exclude

Rodents inside are trapped while entry points are closed with chew-resistant materials.

  • Snap traps in protected spots
  • Hardware cloth and sheet-metal repairs
  • Door sweeps and garage seals
  • Regular trap checks

3. Sanitize and verify

We remove contaminated material, sanitize and return to confirm activity has stopped.

  • Cleanup of droppings and soiled insulation
  • Disinfection of affected areas
  • Exterior monitoring
  • Prevention checklist for bins, fruit and feeders
