Drains and sewer lines in houses from the 1940s
The median San Marino home was built in 1943, which means plenty of original or partly replaced drain and sewer lines. The large, reddish American cockroach typically lives in those lines and in damp crawl spaces and is likely to surface through floor drains, laundry sinks, basement areas and gaps around old pipes, especially in warm weather.
Old plumbing can shelter other insects too. When San Marino's City Hall was tented in 2020, a tiny gnat living in the pipes was part of the problem, along with termites and spiders. For drain-borne cockroaches we treat drains, crawl spaces and the exterior perimeter, and we point out pipe gaps and missing drain covers worth repairing.
