Renting a house in Baldwin Park: who deals with the roaches?
Census estimates count about 14,300 single-family houses in Baldwin Park, roughly three of every four homes, yet 7,735 of the city's 18,282 households rent. Even if every apartment, duplex and mobile home in town were rented out, that would cover fewer than 4,400 of those renters, so several thousand renting families are likely living in houses rather than apartment buildings.
That changes how a cockroach problem plays out. A rented house has no on-site manager. The tenant runs the kitchen, the owner handles repairs, and German cockroaches often ride in on something brought through the door: a used refrigerator, a stove from a relative, a stack of moving boxes. The county's own cockroach guide tells residents to check appliances, furniture and items from storage for egg cases before carrying them inside.
We put our findings in writing for both parties: the prep and sanitation steps that belong to the household, and the leaks, wall gaps and worn door sweeps that belong to the owner. One shared document, in English or Spanish, keeps the two from working against each other.

Postwar houses: water heaters, slabs and meter boxes
The median Baldwin Park home was built in 1964, and close to 4,950 homes went up in the 1950s alone. Houses of that age have usually been through several rounds of plumbing and water heater replacements, and each one can leave an unsealed opening behind. LA County's guide lists the area around water heaters, cupboard cracks and crawl spaces among the places cockroaches spend the day.
Outside, the county describes oriental cockroaches building up in water meter boxes and in hollows under concrete patio slabs where soil has washed away, most often around single-family homes with plenty of plants. They cannot climb smooth surfaces, so they tend to turn up stuck in a tub or along the floor by the back door. American cockroaches come up from sewers and storm drains and can reach a ground floor through drains.
A house with an outdoor species needs work at the slab edge, meter box, drains and door thresholds, not in the kitchen cabinets. German cockroaches are the reverse. Getting the species right before anything is applied decides where the treatment goes.

The county health office is in town, and so were two January closures
Los Angeles County Public Health's Environmental Health Division prints its address, 5050 Commerce Drive in Baldwin Park, on the front of its cockroach guide. The division inspects restaurants and investigates complaints at rental housing everywhere in the county except Pasadena, Long Beach and Vernon, so it is the agency for Baldwin Park too. Its guide points apartment tenants to (888) 700-9995 for information on reporting an infestation in their complex.
A list of county closures compiled by KTLA shows two Baldwin Park restaurants shut for vermin infestation in January 2026: one on January 8, which reopened January 10, and one on Baldwin Park Boulevard on January 13, which reopened January 15. The list does not say whether insects or rodents were found.
For Baldwin Park kitchens we schedule service before opening or after closing, rely on gel bait, growth regulators and traps instead of broadcast spraying near food, and leave a written log of each visit covering what inspectors look for: droppings, live activity and hiding places.
