Hot valley summers on the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains
Calabasas is not a beach city when it comes to temperature. The closest long-running inland weather station, at Pierce College in neighboring Woodland Hills, recorded average July and August highs of about 95°F and roughly 103 days a year at or above 90°F between 1949 and 2012.
UC IPM ties several cockroach habits to that kind of heat. American cockroaches, for instance, do best once temperatures climb past 82°F. In the warm, dry parts of the state, including Southern California, the invasive Turkestan cockroach has been pushing out the Oriental cockroach. And the field cockroach, an outdoor species found in leaf litter and plant debris, may move indoors when it is hot or dry outside. Late-summer roach sightings in a Calabasas garage are therefore not automatically a sign of a kitchen infestation.

1980s townhomes, condos and shared garage walls
Calabasas grew late. Census estimates put the median home's construction year at 1984, and about 3,170 of the city's 9,431 housing units, roughly a third, were built in the 1980s. About 3,600 units (38%) are attached homes or sit in buildings with two or more units, and about 2,780 households rent.
In a townhome or condo community, garages, water heater closets and plumbing walls are often shared with the unit next door. An outdoor roach that gets into a garage stays an outdoor problem, but German cockroaches carried in with groceries, boxes or used appliances can move along those shared walls. When we find German cockroaches in an attached home, we recommend checking the neighboring unit, and we can coordinate with the HOA or property manager.

Field roach, Turkestan roach or German roach?
UC IPM notes that the field cockroach is often mistaken for the German cockroach. Both are small and light brown, but the field cockroach lives outdoors in leaf litter and mostly wanders in, while the German cockroach lives and breeds indoors near food, water and warmth. Turkestan males look like small American cockroaches with yellowish-tan wings edged in cream, while the dark, short-winged females are easy to confuse with the Oriental cockroach.
The treatment depends on the answer. Outdoor species call for work around the foundation, garage door seals, water meter boxes, irrigated planters and the leaf litter that collects against walls. German cockroaches call for gel bait inside cabinets and appliance voids, a growth regulator that halts breeding, and monitors to track the result. We identify the species on the first visit so you do not pay for the wrong kind of treatment.

Who handles cockroaches in Calabasas
Calabasas is inside the service area of the Los Angeles County West Vector & Vector-Borne Disease Control District, whose listed programs cover mosquitoes, ticks, Africanized honey bees and fire ants. Cockroaches are not among them, so treatment on private property is a job for a licensed pest control company.
Restaurants and other food businesses in Calabasas are inspected by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, which enforces state health codes everywhere in the county except Long Beach, Pasadena and Vernon. Commercial kitchens can book us outside service hours, and every visit is recorded in writing.
