Rat and Mouse Control in East Los Angeles

Rodents in East LA have a lot to work with: houses around 70 years old, busy food corridors and alleys where trash and dumped items pile up. We find how they get in, close those gaps with metal, trap the ones inside and clean up what they leave behind.

County health records show a food market on Whittier Blvd closed for vermin infestation from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, 2025, and a restaurant on E. Whittier Blvd closed for the same reason on Sept. 15, 2026.

Seventy-year-old houses, many ways in

Half of East LA's homes were built in 1950 or earlier. By that age, the likely openings are familiar: foundation vents on raised wood floors with rusted or missing screens, gaps where gas and water lines enter the house, eaves and roof vents that have pulled loose, and garage doors that no longer meet the ground.

Different rodents use different routes. Roof rats tend to climb fences, wires and trees into attics; house mice slip into walls through small utility gaps; Norway rats are more likely to burrow along foundations and travel through alleys and drains. We identify which one you have before choosing where to seal and trap.

Alleys, illegal dumping and food on the boulevard

The county's annual report for East LA records 1,237 illegal-dumping cleanups in fiscal year 2023-24. Mattresses, furniture and bagged trash left in alleys can give rats shelter and food close to homes. Dumping in unincorporated East LA is a county Public Works matter; our part is making sure the rats it may attract can't get into your house or business.

Commercial pressure is real too. County Public Health closed a food market on Whittier Blvd for vermin infestation in fall 2025 and a restaurant on E. Whittier Blvd in September 2026. For food businesses we focus on receiving doors, door sweeps, drains, dry storage and dumpster areas, and we leave written service records after every visit.

Rodents, fleas and typhus in LA County

Flea-borne typhus reached a record 220 cases county-wide in 2025, and 109 more had been counted in 2026 by late September. None of the outbreaks the county announced were in East LA, but Public Health says the risk is county-wide and names rats, stray cats and opossums as carriers of the fleas.

Keeping rodents out of walls, attics and the space under the house reduces the places those fleas can be carried. Exclusion, trapping and cleanup of droppings and nesting material are the core of our rodent work for exactly that reason.

Chewed food packages

Gnawed bags of rice, beans, bread or pet food in the pantry or garage.

How we handle rodent control in East Los Angeles

1. Trace the routes

A full walk of the roofline, attic, crawl space, garage and alley side to find every opening and the paths leading to it.

  • Foundation and crawl-space vents
  • Roof, eave and attic check
  • Garage door and utility gaps
  • Photo report in English or Spanish

2. Close and capture

Openings sealed with steel mesh, hardware cloth, metal flashing and door sweeps, while traps remove the rodents already inside.

  • Metal exclusion, not foam alone
  • Door sweeps for homes and kitchens
  • Traps placed away from kids and pets
  • Trap checks until captures stop

3. Sanitize and monitor

Removal of droppings and nesting material, sanitizing of affected areas and monitoring to confirm no new activity.

  • Droppings and nest cleanup
  • Sanitizing treatment
  • Exterior monitoring
  • Written visit log for food businesses
