Rodent Control and Pack Rat Removal in Apple Valley, CA

Pack rat nest of twigs, dry cholla cactus pieces and shredded twine piled behind galvanized feed bins in a wooden feed shed, with a gloved hand setting a snap trap along the wall

On an Apple Valley property, rodent trouble often starts outside the house, in a feed room, tack shed, parked trailer or lumber pile at the edge of open desert. We identify the rodent, trap the ones inside, seal the key buildings and clean up droppings without raising dust.

The Town's General Plan lists deer mice, pocket mice, kangaroo rats, desert woodrats, pocket gophers and two kinds of ground squirrels among Apple Valley's common mammals.

Feed rooms, hay and horse lots

Much of Apple Valley is planned to allow horses and other animals, and the Estate Residential ΒΎ category is designed around animal keeping. On those lots, rodent pressure follows the feed. Grain, pellets, dog food and birdseed give mice and rats a steady supply, and stacked hay bales make sheltered nesting space.

The Town requires waste from horses and other farm animals to be cleaned up every seven days and hauled off the property. Keeping to that schedule also removes spilled grain that draws rodents. Feed in metal cans with tight lids and hay on pallets away from walls does the rest. PesPro does not treat flies on livestock. [2] [7]

Deer mice, pack rats and ground squirrels from the open desert

Deer mice, kangaroo rats and desert woodrats all appear on the Town's wildlife list. UC IPM notes that deer mice are uncommon in cities unless fields or open land are nearby, which describes much of Apple Valley. They readily move into vacant homes, cabins and outbuildings to cache seeds and nest.

Woodrats, often called pack rats, are native rodents that UC IPM says may live in and around homes. They tend to build bulky stick-and-debris nests in sheds, wood piles and vehicles that sit unused. California ground squirrels dig burrows about four inches across that can run 5 to 30 feet.

Because these rodents come from the surrounding land, trapping alone rarely settles the problem; sealing the buildings you need protected is what makes it last. [3] [15] [17]

Hantavirus: rare in the county, serious when it happens

Deer mice are the main carrier of Sin Nombre hantavirus, which UC IPM says causes a severe lung illness with a fatality rate of about 36%. It is rare here: of 99 California infections recorded from 1980 to 2025, two were traced to exposure in San Bernardino County. Those are county-wide figures, not Apple Valley cases.

The risk comes from breathing dust from dried droppings and urine. County guidance says to wet droppings and nests with disinfectant or diluted bleach, wipe them up and never sweep or vacuum. Our cleanup of droppings and nesting material follows those wet methods wherever it is accessible. [15] [22] [23]

Freezing nights, 1980s homes and a market on Outer Highway 18

Winter nights on the valley floor fall into the lower 20s, according to the Town's General Plan. UC IPM notes that house mice often move indoors in autumn as nights turn colder, squeezing under gaps a quarter-inch tall. About 8,800 Apple Valley homes date from the 1980s, an age when garage-door seals and vent screens are often worn through.

County inspectors closed a meat market on Outer Highway 18 for a rodent infestation on February 6, 2023, and again on March 30. For food businesses we pair trapping and exclusion with a dated service log. [4] [16] [1] [28] [29]

Rodent Control in Apple Valley: common questions

How can I tell a pack rat from an ordinary rat?

Look at the nest. Pack rats, or woodrats, build bulky piles of sticks, cactus pieces and debris in sheds or under stored items. Norway and roof rats make nests of shredded paper or fiber. Droppings and where they turn up confirm which one you have.

How should I clean deer mouse droppings out of a shed or trailer?

Open it up and let it air out first. Then wet droppings and nests with disinfectant or diluted bleach, wipe them up with gloves on and double-bag the waste. Do not sweep or vacuum, which raises dust; for a heavily soiled space, our cleanup service uses the same wet methods.

Do you use poison bait around horses and dogs?

We start with sealing and snap traps placed where animals cannot reach them. On horse properties and near open desert we avoid rodenticide wherever a pet, owl, hawk or kit fox could eat a poisoned rodent.

Can you rodent-proof a tack room or barn, not just the house?

We can seal enclosed spaces such as tack rooms, feed rooms and garages with hardware cloth, sheet metal and door sweeps. Open barns and shade structures cannot be fully sealed, so there we focus on feed storage, trapping and monitoring.

Why do mice show up in the garage every fall?

House mice that spent the summer outdoors look for warmth when Apple Valley nights drop toward the lower 20s. A gap a quarter-inch tall under a garage door or around a pipe is enough. Sealing those gaps before the cold sets in keeps the problem from repeating each year.

Do you handle rodents in Apple Valley food businesses?

Yes. The county closes a food facility with a rodent infestation regardless of its letter grade. We visit before opening or after closing, rely on traps and exclusion near food and leave a dated log each time.

Roof rats overhead, Norway rats underfoot, mice in the pantry

Three rodents account for nearly every call in Apple Valley, and they live differently. Roof rats climb into attics, trees, ivy and fence tops and eat backyard citrus and avocados on the tree. Norway rats burrow along foundations and under sheds. House mice live indoors, rarely more than about 30 feet from the nest.

Mild winters mean none of them hibernate, and the first cool nights and autumn rains push rats indoors. Older housing supplies the openings: any gap wider than a quarter inch at a vent screen, eave board, utility line or door threshold is enough.

Inspection, trapping and monitoring: the PesPro rodent sequence

The inspection covers attic, crawl space, garage, kitchen and yard, reading droppings, rub marks, gnawing and burrows to confirm which species is active and where it travels. Traps go on those routes: fastened to beams for roof rats, tight against walls for Norway rats, closely spaced for mice.

Indoors the program leans on snap traps rather than poison, following LA County guidance, because a poisoned rodent that dies inside a wall leaves odor and flies. Monitoring visits reset traps, remove what was caught and compare activity with the last visit so placements move as the rodents do. Sealing openings is Rodent Exclusion, a separate add-on.

Preparing for the first visit, and what the first weeks look like

Before the technician arrives at your Apple Valley address, clear access to the attic hatch, under-sink cabinets and garage walls, and raise stored boxes so runways show. Pick up fallen fruit and bring pet food in at night. Do not set out poison first: it hides evidence and risks a dead rat in the wall.

Rats are wary of new objects and may ignore traps for days or weeks, so early visits leave traps baited but unset until the bait disappears. Catches and quieter nights follow; monitoring continues because new rats replace caught ones while fruit, ivy and open gaps remain. Never sweep droppings dry: glove up, soak with disinfectant, wipe, double-bag.

The 30-day guarantee for rodents, the quote and same-day calls

Every PesPro service carries a 30-day guarantee, and rodents sit in the strongest tier with bed bugs and cockroaches: if rats or mice reappear within 30 days of a service, PesPro returns for a third visit at no extra cost, where other pests would pay 30% of the original price for a return visit.

The quote is free and written after the inspection. Rodent control is priced by property size, activity found and how often visits are needed; exclusion is priced separately by the number and type of openings to seal. Trapping alone or sealing: the inspection says which.

Same-day service is available for an extra fee. It makes sense when rats are inside the living space, when wiring has been gnawed, when a Apple Valley food business has an inspection pending, or when a tenant complaint has started a habitability clock. Call (323) 472-5329 any hour, or the office and WhatsApp line, (323) 303-3522, in business hours.

Service records for Apple Valley managers, and prevention that holds

The LA County Department of Public Health reported record flea-borne typhus cases in 2025, ties the fleas to rats, free-roaming cats and opossums, and recommends controlling fleas before or alongside trapping where typhus is a concern. For landlords, California Civil Code 1941.1 lists vermin-free premises among habitability duties, so dated service records matter.

PesPro's program keeps digital service logs that Apple Valley owners, HOA boards and inspectors can open any time, same-day compliance documentation when a citation is at stake, tenant-notification templates and consolidated invoicing for multi-site portfolios. Over 15 years the company has protected more than 10,000 properties, more than 500 of them multi-unit.

  • Trim limbs touching the roof; pull ivy off fences and walls
  • Pick up fallen citrus and avocados; feed pets only what they finish
  • Tight trash lids; stored items 18 inches off the ground
  • Seal gaps over a quarter inch with metal mesh, sheet metal or concrete
  • Cover a car parked outdoors for weeks; rats chew engine wiring

Planning rodent control at your Apple Valley property

How do I know whether it is rats or mice?

A house mouse weighs about half an ounce and stays within 30 feet of its nest. Rats weigh 5 to 18 ounces: a roof rat's tail is longer than its body and it favors attics; a Norway rat is stockier and burrows.

Why has nothing been caught yet?

Rats avoid new objects and can ignore a trap for days or weeks; floor traps also miss roof rats traveling beams and pipes. If a trap line stays untouched past the second visit, placements move.

Does the program seal the holes rodents use?

Sealing is Rodent Exclusion, a separate add-on and structural work: vents, utility penetrations, foundation cracks and roofline gaps closed with metal mesh, sheet metal or concrete. The inspection lists the openings found and quotes exclusion on its own line.

What does the 30-day guarantee cover for rodents in Apple Valley?

If rodent activity reappears within 30 days of a service, PesPro returns for a third visit at no extra cost. The exact wording is on your quote, next to the monitoring schedule.

Is poison used inside the house?

The default indoors is snap traps, because a poisoned rodent can die inside a wall or ceiling. Bait stations are locked, tamper-resistant and placed where children and pets cannot reach them. Tell the technician about pets before placement.

When is same-day rodent service worth the extra fee?

When droppings appear where food is prepared for infants or vulnerable adults, when rats are in living areas, or when a health inspection or tenant complaint sets a deadline. For attic noises alone, a regular appointment follows the same plan.
