Chino's rats and mice come from several directions: feed and outbuildings left from the dairy years, the willow bottoms of the Prado Basin and fields graded for new homes. We identify the rodent and its way in, trap the ones inside, close openings with metal and remove nests and droppings afterward.
At its peak the Chino agricultural preserve held just under 400 dairies and roughly 400,000 cows; much of that land now holds homes, business parks and industry.

UC IPM calls the Norway rat the barn rat for good reason. It burrows along foundations, under rubbish and woodpiles and around fields, prefers cereal grains, and spoils stored animal feed as well as the containers that hold it.
Pieces of that farm landscape remain in Chino. In 2014 the county traded about 105 acres of former dairy land east of Chino Airport for roughly 272 acres beside Prado Regional Park. The county committed that acreage to farming or open space. Properties near pasture, corrals or feed storage are likely to see Norway rats and house mice drift toward garages and sheds.
There we check feed rooms, tack rooms and sheds as closely as the house. Feed in metal bins, pet food brought in at night and raised woodpiles take pressure off the structure while we seal it. [33] [4]
To the south, the Prado Basin holds about 4,100 acres of riparian habitat, mostly cottonwood and willow forest, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. UC IPM names riverbank and stream vegetation as roof rat habitat. It adds that roof rats routinely travel 300 feet or more to feed, often along fence tops and utility lines.
Homes near Prado Regional Park and the basin edge are likely to get roof rats coming in high, through attic vents, eave gaps and limbs touching the roof. We screen vents with half-inch galvanized mesh, never chicken wire, and recommend cutting back limbs within six feet of the roofline. [18] [33] [19]
Building continues in the south of the city. In ZIP code 91708, about 3,200 homes date from 2010 or later, nearly 1,000 of them from 2020 on. When nearby fields are graded, mice and rats from the brush are likely to seek the closest cover, often a new garage, block wall or shed.
The West Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District offers rodent inspections, in which a technician checks a property's perimeter for rodents and possible access points. It also surveys sites for vectors before construction. Once rodents are confirmed, trapping, sealing and cleanup are jobs a licensed company like PesPro takes on. [2] [14] [13]
San Bernardino County treats a rodent infestation in a restaurant or market as an immediate danger that closes it on the spot. In October 2023 a Chino market on Sixth Street was closed for rodents and stayed shut six days.
Commercial rodent work centers on deliveries and storage: rear doors that do not seal, dry-goods rooms, grease bins and trash areas. We rely on traps and exclusion rather than loose bait near food, and each visit is logged for the county inspector. [24] [25]
The species decides whether we look low at burrows and doors or high at eaves and vents.
Snap traps for the rodents already inside while every opening larger than a quarter inch is closed.
Nest and droppings removal where accessible, disinfection and exterior monitoring.

Read the originalNew homes in south Chino often sit beside fields still being graded, and the rodents living there look for the nearest shelter. Garage doors, utility entries and the base of stucco walls can leave gaps of a quarter inch, enough for a mouse or a young rat.
It offers rodent inspections: a technician checks your property's perimeter for rodents and entry points. Trapping, sealing and cleanup are then up to the owner or a licensed company such as PesPro.
Our approach starts with snap traps and sealing. UC IPM notes that California now prohibits most uses of anticoagulant rodenticides. Near the basin's wildlife corridor we also keep any bait away from spots where hawks, owls or coyotes could eat a poisoned rodent.
Look at the tail and the face. Pulled forward, a roof rat's tail reaches at least to its snout, and it has a pointed muzzle and large ears. A Norway rat is heavier, with a blunt muzzle and shorter tail. Roof rats nest high; Norway rats burrow.
Yes. UC IPM notes that rats often gnaw engine wiring in cars, trucks and farm equipment, leading to costly repairs. Sealing the garage and removing nearby nesting spots lowers the risk for vehicles parked inside or beside it.
Do not sweep or vacuum them dry, since rodent-borne germs such as hantavirus spread in dust. The West Valley district advises gloves, a spray of disinfectant or one part bleach to ten parts water, and a five-minute soak. Then wipe it up with paper towels and bag it. For larger outbuildings, our cleanup service can handle it.
Three rodents account for nearly every call in Chino, and they live differently. Roof rats climb into attics, trees, ivy and fence tops and eat backyard citrus and avocados on the tree. Norway rats burrow along foundations and under sheds. House mice live indoors, rarely more than about 30 feet from the nest.
Mild winters mean none of them hibernate, and the first cool nights and autumn rains push rats indoors. Older housing supplies the openings: any gap wider than a quarter inch at a vent screen, eave board, utility line or door threshold is enough.
The inspection covers attic, crawl space, garage, kitchen and yard, reading droppings, rub marks, gnawing and burrows to confirm which species is active and where it travels. Traps go on those routes: fastened to beams for roof rats, tight against walls for Norway rats, closely spaced for mice.
Indoors the program leans on snap traps rather than poison, following LA County guidance, because a poisoned rodent that dies inside a wall leaves odor and flies. Monitoring visits reset traps, remove what was caught and compare activity with the last visit so placements move as the rodents do. Sealing openings is Rodent Exclusion, a separate add-on.
Before the technician arrives at your Chino address, clear access to the attic hatch, under-sink cabinets and garage walls, and raise stored boxes so runways show. Pick up fallen fruit and bring pet food in at night. Do not set out poison first: it hides evidence and risks a dead rat in the wall.
Rats are wary of new objects and may ignore traps for days or weeks, so early visits leave traps baited but unset until the bait disappears. Catches and quieter nights follow; monitoring continues because new rats replace caught ones while fruit, ivy and open gaps remain. Never sweep droppings dry: glove up, soak with disinfectant, wipe, double-bag.
Every PesPro service carries a 30-day guarantee, and rodents sit in the strongest tier with bed bugs and cockroaches: if rats or mice reappear within 30 days of a service, PesPro returns for a third visit at no extra cost, where other pests would pay 30% of the original price for a return visit.
The quote is free and written after the inspection. Rodent control is priced by property size, activity found and how often visits are needed; exclusion is priced separately by the number and type of openings to seal. Trapping alone or sealing: the inspection says which.
Same-day service is available for an extra fee. It makes sense when rats are inside the living space, when wiring has been gnawed, when a Chino food business has an inspection pending, or when a tenant complaint has started a habitability clock. Call (323) 472-5329 any hour, or the office and WhatsApp line, (323) 303-3522, in business hours.
The LA County Department of Public Health reported record flea-borne typhus cases in 2025, ties the fleas to rats, free-roaming cats and opossums, and recommends controlling fleas before or alongside trapping where typhus is a concern. For landlords, California Civil Code 1941.1 lists vermin-free premises among habitability duties, so dated service records matter.
PesPro's program keeps digital service logs that Chino owners, HOA boards and inspectors can open any time, same-day compliance documentation when a citation is at stake, tenant-notification templates and consolidated invoicing for multi-site portfolios. Over 15 years the company has protected more than 10,000 properties, more than 500 of them multi-unit.
A house mouse weighs about half an ounce and stays within 30 feet of its nest. Rats weigh 5 to 18 ounces: a roof rat's tail is longer than its body and it favors attics; a Norway rat is stockier and burrows.
Rats avoid new objects and can ignore a trap for days or weeks; floor traps also miss roof rats traveling beams and pipes. If a trap line stays untouched past the second visit, placements move.
Sealing is Rodent Exclusion, a separate add-on and structural work: vents, utility penetrations, foundation cracks and roofline gaps closed with metal mesh, sheet metal or concrete. The inspection lists the openings found and quotes exclusion on its own line.
If rodent activity reappears within 30 days of a service, PesPro returns for a third visit at no extra cost. The exact wording is on your quote, next to the monitoring schedule.
The default indoors is snap traps, because a poisoned rodent can die inside a wall or ceiling. Bait stations are locked, tamper-resistant and placed where children and pets cannot reach them. Tell the technician about pets before placement.
When droppings appear where food is prepared for infants or vulnerable adults, when rats are in living areas, or when a health inspection or tenant complaint sets a deadline. For attic noises alone, a regular appointment follows the same plan.
